Contrary to popular belief, there is more to see in New York City than just Manhattan. Tucked just outside, is the borough of Queens, NY which offers much American history and exquisite sights to see. Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Corona Park, home of the twentieth century World’s Fair is over 1200 acres of what is formerly a dumping ground, though it was eventually cleared to make room for the World’s Fair. The World’s Fair in Queens, 1964 is remembered as a showcase for American culture and technology of the mid-20th century. There are many other facilities that offer other recreational activities including sports fields, walking paths, dog parks, museums, theaters, ice skating, boating, nature center and more.
Citi Field
Also located right in the center of Flushing Meadows, Queens, is one of America’s iconic baseball fields occupied the New York Mets; Citi Field (formerly the adjacent Shea Stadium). Designed with some of America’s favorite pastime’s history in mind, all of the seats in the park are green to pay homage to the Polo Grounds, which is the original home of the Mets. The entrance to the stadium, also known as the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, after the Brooklyn Dodgers legend, pays tribute to all of his career accomplishments. The ballpark carries many traditions and holds various amenities and facilities. The Home Run Apple has made its way from Shea Stadium to behind centerfield at Citi; when a Mets player hits a homerun, the apple rises up, fully lit, and sporting the Mets logo as a fan favorite congratulatory gesture. Citi Field offers a family entertainment area including miniature whiffle ball and a variety of eateries.
Queens Botanical Gardens
Queens Botanical Gardens – “Where people, plants, and cultures meet” – are known for their beautiful backdrop for weddings, corporate and social events and educational services. They pride themselves on cultural research. The 39-acre living museum offers hands-on workshops for students of all ages; pre-k through high school. There are three types of tours available: Sustainability Tour, Guided Garden Tour, or a Self-Guided Tour.
